Skating at Market Square

On Saturday February 18th, the long awaited official opening of Market Square at City Hall will take place starting at 11:30a.m.

The central feature is an outdoor skating rink and water feature surrounded by stone benches which are shaded by native trees and plants. Decorative lighting throughout the square makes it an enjoyable space day or night.

The oval-shaped glass pavilion building just east of the skating rink and water feature will be a great place to take a break and watch the action on the ice.

See the City of Guelph’s Market Square website for more details including the Welcome to Market Square booklet that, for some reason or another, lacks in ads from Carden Street Businesses.

Please help out if you can! Visit the website for updates on Andrea and donate to the Andrea Vellinga Fund, created by the Guelph Storm. I am so proud of Guelph Storm fans for raising $15,000. It really shows that our city is ‘Making a difference’! I am also proud of the Storm Alumni for stepping up and offering their help and the Storm organization for starting the fund - as always a class act from a class organization.

Thirteen years ago, Mike Vellinga was an OHL champion (with the Guelph Storm) and a Blackhawks’ seventh-round draft pick. A tough, hard-shooting defenceman, he was willing to do whatever it took to fulfill his dream of making the NHL.

While Vellinga never made it that far, his 10-team, 11-year, 710-game journey through four different leagues did bring him another gift: his wife, the former Andrea Voss, and their daughter, Lydia, now 4. Vellinga retired after the 2008-09 season, as the three moved closer to Andrea’s family in Pendleton, Ind.

Guelph Skateboard Park Proposal

Share

There is a proposal to develop a new skateboarding park for Silvercreek Park. Report found here.

This issue has had a very, very long, twisting and difficult road for Guelph. To develop just one permanent skateboard park, let alone additional smaller ones, as proposed in the late 1990′s, throughout the city has been hell. I was involved with this issue as part of the Guelph Youth Council back in 1997 and has been around since the late 80′s.

If you have noticed, skateboarding did not go away, it got even more popular. It is time we act once and for all.

With the experience we had with Deerpath, I was worried we could see a repeat of several issues. However, after reading the recommendations, I am happy to support the new proposed location. It is safe, secure, easily accessible, and will be able much easier to monitor more closely by police and the community at large.

In terms of timing, we have been through this before with Deerpath and the time it took to build (Proposed around 1998, and built mid 2000′s almost 6-7 years after proposal). I would hope that council will work hard to push this item up the infrastructure line and support skateboarding in Guelph. As well I would recommend the following:

Skateboarding in Guelph: Past, Present & Future

Share

This is history of Skateboarding in Guelph from mid-1990′s. All files in PDF form.

Please see that Guelph Police, many local stores, other youth groups, the City of Guelph Recreation and Parks Dept., and many adults, like City Council, and youth have supported the need for these facilities for a long, long time. I will post more articles & information from my files so that everyone can see just how long this issue has been dragging out.

How to be bike friendly in Guelph

Share

Key ingredients in making a community bike friendly:

•having a master plan.

•having major streets that can accommodate bicycles.

•having a bicycle co-ordinator.

•having a citizen’s advocacy group.

•having plenty of bike parking places.

•having enforcement of the rules and encouragement for riding bikes.

Some of this is in place. Some of it is not. it is time as a community that we seriously get behind cycling. We keep having a Cycling committee come and go. It is time we all get together and have a permanent group, even a not for profit one, to get Guelph’s cycling up to snuff to be world class.

The Downtown Secondary Plan –

Envision Guelph Downtown

As Guelph continues to grow, the City is planning for more homes, businesses and jobs downtown. Envision Guelph Downtown will provide a long-term vision for future development, and incorporate the goals of Ontario’s Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, Guelph’s Community Energy Initiative, its Urban Design Action Plan and other special planning studies.

The City is seeking public input regarding the directions for guiding development within the study area over the next 20 years. The Study, including public input, will provide the basis for City staff to prepare the Official Plan Amendment to be brought forward later this year.

City of Guelph Services Review: First 75 Ranked

Share

Guelph City Council has finally launched an exhaustive process to review all of the approximately 300 municipal services the city offers. The goal of the review is to ensure what is being offered is being effectively and efficiently done so, even if that means some services will no longer be offered by the city but other partners.

Each year for the next 4 years, Councillors will look at  75 services and rank from most to least important. While there will be conflicts of whats important to one councillor over another, I see this processes as welcome change from years past. It is important that councillors learn about the different services our tax dollars go to. Hopefully, they will then realize that some of the services provided are actually very impoertant to the operation of this city and its citizens.

Event Parking is not fair when you compare!

Share

Taken from the WARD 2 Blog

I recommend that the city give Storm season ticket holders a discount. See Guelph Tribune article.

According to the Mercury’s February 8 article on this issue, City parking staff are recommending the proposed increase because many cities charge much more for special event parking than Guelph does. Findings of my informal research do not support that claim, especially with respect to OHL Storm games.
